Seed Pre-Treatment Services
Many Australian native seeds have evolved to remain dormant until the right environmental cues appear. Some respond to heat or water absorption, while others rely on mechanical triggers or seasonal patterns. These adaptations support survival in challenging climates, but they can also make germination difficult without the right preparation. By applying the right treatment, we can encourage seeds to wake from dormancy and germinate consistently and reliably.
Nindethana offers a range of professional pre-treatment services so your seed arrives ready to sow. Pre-treated seed can reduce uncertainty, save significant time onsite, and support stronger establishment in nurseries and field plantings. Every treatment is carried out by our experienced team using methods that reflect current best practice and decades of practical knowledge.
Pre-treatment Methods
We operate under relevant state permits and follow ethical, sustainable practices to protect native species and habitats. Our team works closely with landholders, Traditional Owners, and regulators to support healthy, enduring native plant populations.
-
Boiling Water Treatment
Many Acacia and legume species have hard seed coats that naturally prevent water from entering. Pouring boiling water over the seeds and allowing them to soak as the water cools softens this outer layer and encourages the seed to take up moisture, improving the likelihood of germination.
-
Mechanical Scarification
Some species have seed coats that are too tough for heat alone. Mechanical scarification gently abrades or nicks the seed surface so that moisture can penetrate without damaging the embryo. This technique is especially effective for species with particularly durable shells.
-
Smoke Treatment
Fire-adapted species often require compounds in smoke to trigger germination. Treating seeds with smoke-infused water or using smoke-treated media mimics these post-fire conditions, helping dormant seed recognise that it is time to sprout.
-
Cold Stratification
Species from cooler climates may need a period of winter-like conditions before they will germinate. Cold stratification recreates this by keeping seeds in a cold, moist environment for several weeks, preparing them to germinate once temperatures rise.

Ordering Pre-treated seed
If you would like your seed pre-treated, please let us know when placing your order. Some treatments may add a small amount of processing time before dispatch.
Location-specific Services
Pre-treatment options vary between our facilities. If you’d like to know what services are available at each location, please get in touch and our team can guide you based on your order and species requirements.
Please Note
Not all species require pre-treatment, and some treatments are unsuitable for application before shipping. Our team can advise on the best approach for your specific order and species list.
