Seed Testing

Understanding seed quality is essential for reliable restoration, regeneration and nursery outcomes. Nindethana offers professional seed testing services so you can assess purity, germination and viability. Clear testing results help you plan confidently, set accurate sowing rates, manage inventory and ensure you're working with seed that’s fit for purpose.

Our Approach

Seed testing is a core service delivered across our NSW, ACT and QLD hubs. In 2025, we expanded our national testing program to include hundreds of lots annually, combining hands-on laboratory assessment with emerging rapid-evaluation tools. We’re increasingly using x-ray imaging to assess internal seed condition, particularly in small or dormant species, helping us build stronger species-specific baselines and make more informed decisions.

Our testing framework is guided by practical metrics such as Net Realisable Value and obsolescence indicators, developed with our seed science team. These tools help us prioritise lots for testing and maintain a consistent, evidence-based approach to inventory management.

What We Test

Seed storage is a core service we provide to support restoration, research, and land management projects across Australia. Many native species are sensitive to moisture, temperature changes, and poor handling, which can quickly reduce viability. By using our controlled-environment facilities, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your seed is kept in stable conditions, monitored by an experienced team, and ready for use whenever you need it.

  • Germination

Determines how many seeds in a lot will germinate under optimal conditions. This helps guide sowing rates and assess overall seed performance.

  • Purity

Measures the proportion of clean seed compared to other plant material or debris. Purity data is important for compliance, costing and planning.

  • Viability

Identifies how many seeds are alive, even if they are dormant and not yet ready to germinate. Viability testing is especially useful for storage planning and species with complex dormancy traits.

How Testing Supports Your Project

Testing gives you the evidence needed to make informed decisions at every stage of seed use. Results can guide pre-treatment choices, determine whether a lot should be stored or used immediately, support reporting and compliance requirements, and reduce the risk of poor establishment in the field or nursery. For large-scale projects, testing also helps compare cost efficiency across seed lots.

Who we work with

We provide seed testing services to environmental restoration practitioners, government and Landcare groups, mining and civil rehabilitation teams, native plant nurseries, and wholesale or commercial buyers.

Turnaround Times

Testing timeframes vary depending on the type of assessment required. Some rapid evaluations may be completed in around a week, while full germination tests can take several weeks. We’ll confirm expected timelines when arranging your test.
