THEMEDA triandra [seeding grade]
Themeda triandra [seeding grade], also known as "Kangaroo Grass", is a grass found in NSW, NT, QLD, SA, TAS, VIC and WA. Expect a maximum height when fully grown of 2m, and indicative flowering times are Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov and Dec.
A widely recognised and highly adaptable Australian native grass, Themeda triandra is a foundational species for restoration, revegetation and landscape projects. Occurring naturally across most of Australia, it plays a critical role in rebuilding resilient grassland ecosystems.
This warm-season perennial tussock grass is valued for its drought tolerance, ability to establish on a range of soil types, and strong compatibility with other native species. Once established, it provides long-term groundcover, helping to stabilise soils, reduce erosion and improve landscape function.
Kangaroo Grass is also important for biodiversity outcomes. It provides habitat and food resources for native fauna and supports ecological processes in grassland and open woodland systems. Its seasonal colour variation, from green growth to distinctive reddish-brown seed heads, also makes it suitable for naturalistic landscaping applications.

Biosecurity
Seeding‑grade seed is supplied in a natural, minimally processed form suitable for broad‑scale revegetation works implemented using in-field direct seeding methods. This product may include stems, florets, husks, and other non‑seed plant material, resulting in a lower pure‑seed count than cleaned or retail‑grade alternatives. Because of its raw composition, it may require preparation such as mulching or blending before application.
The lower level of processing makes seeding‑grade seed an economic option intended for large‑area projects and is generally available in bulk quantities. Although sometimes suitable, it is usually not recommended for nursery propagation.
